Our Plan for Bristol The Bristol Liberal Democrats were proud to launch their local election campaign in Westbury-on-Trym on Saturday 6th April for the most important council elections in over a decade. As we move away from the Mayoral system to a Committee-based system, having qualified and experienced councillors who will fight for their communities in City Hall is so important. All of our candidates have signed up for our six missions for Bristol, which focus on creating a healthier city that cares, action not words on the climate crisis, pushing for a children-centered city, fixing our broken public transport, fostering a caring council, and building thriving communities across Bristol. We have put forward a full slate of 70 candidates across the city, so everyone in Bristol can back our long-term vision for a better Bristol. While Labour and the Green party are playing politics over control of City Hall, we are working hard in our communities, continuing our presence as community champions. A HEALTHIER CITY THAT CARES Lobby government to fund social care and public health to reduce NHS pressure Coordinate GPs, NHS services & social care for better patient outcomes Work with the NHS to improve access to dentistry ACTION NOT WORDS ON THE CLIMATE CRISIS Accelerate our transition to 100% renewable energy Plant one million trees over the next ten years Expand affordable heat networks within the city CHILDREN CENTRED CITY End the SEND crisis by providing more special school spaces Make sure every secondary school has a mental health counsellor Expand and promote youth services within our communities FIXING OUR BROKEN TRANSPORT NETWORK Take back control of our buses - franchising and a bus for every community Introduce two kilometres of new segregated cycle way per year, year on year Expand rail, tram and metrobus services through government funding A COUNCIL THAT WORKS FOR YOU Bring more decisions closer to the people through effective area committees Have councillors that listen and pro-actively campaign for their communities Our councillors will collaborate with others for the good of Bristol THRIVING COMMUNITIES Invest in and improve our libraries making them fit for the next generation A decent park for every community and a play park for every child Take every opportunity to expand social housing to meet the housing crisis

Support our campaign for a new Health Practice in South Bristol Bristol Liberal Democrats are calling on Bristol City Council and the Integrated Care Board (NHS) to work together and urgently deliver a new Health Practice, including GPs, community nurses and NHS dentists, for South Bristol. Given the amount of new housing planned with already overburdened services this provision is needed now. 3211

Back Bus Franchising A franchised model (most notably in place in London), is where the local authority specifies the bus services to be provided, determining the routes, timetables and fares, rather than bus companies doing so. Services are then operated under contract by private companies through a competitive tendering process. This would increase competition in Bristol's bus system as well as making the private companies accountable for the service they provide.Franchising also affords control over the type of vehicles being operated, supporting the roll-out of battery and/or hydrogen-powered fleets, which will improve local air quality.Manchester has begun rolling out its own franchised bus system, and London has had its since 1986. Isn’t it time Bristol got the reliable, accountable bus system it deserves? Transport in Bristol is in chaos. Car usage has been on the rise for years, resulting in greater congestion and pollution. In the face of this, our city desperately needs improved public transport. However, our current system relies on private companies running bus routes with very little oversight from the council. Private firms can change routes, amend timetables or even scrap services with short notice and without consultation with the council or residents. This allows large bus companies to focus on making huge profits without a care for the local communities that rely on their services. This is not good enough and we must demand better. The Bus Services Act 2017 devolved powers to regional mayors to establish bus franchising schemes. Under such a scheme, the authority can decide the routes and timetables that the city needs, then the bus companies have to bid to run them. This is already how things work in London and now Manchester and would allow us to take back control of our public transport for the good of the whole city. 2734
