No new roads on the Brislington Greenway

Sign our petition for the council to only consider active and mass transport options

We were recently invited to a meeting to look at six shortlisted transport options for the Greenway. This shortlist of six will be further reduced to two final options, which will be presented to the public in a future consultation.

Depressingly, five out of the six options involve putting a road on the Greenway, which could be for general traffic only, buses only, or a mixture of the two.

Our view has always been that increasing road capacity will simply encourage more people to make more journeys by car, and would take over what is now an important wildlife corridor. Building a road will also be hugely expensive, require a massive amount of engineering, and be enormously disruptive for residents in neighbouring streets. Any potential gain in terms of bus journey times is unknown. We could be spending a lot of money on something that will have very little benefit.

We have long campaigned against more road building in this location, so we are disappointed to see the return of these options once again. We have previously submitted two petitions on this issue, with thousands of signatures from local residents who share our view, although it appears these have been ignored. We have also written to transport officers requesting that one of the final two options should be for an active travel corridor along the Greenway, although we don't know if this will happen.

What we do know is that local Green Party councillors do NOT support the active travel option along the Greenway.

At the end of the meeting, we were asked to rank the six options in preferential order and Green Party councillors chose options that involved road building for general traffic on the Greenway. For this reason we have decided to launch a new petition to demonstrate the strength of feeling of local residents.

If you agree with us that a new road will just encourage more journeys by car, and if you would prefer to see an active travel corridor along the Greenway, please sign our petition below:
