Lib Dems back new local buses for Bristol

4 Aug 2025

The council has announced that new bus services are coming to Bristol, including an extended service for Whitchurch and additional night buses. The Liberal Democrats supported the investment that secured these improvements for our city’s bus network.

Earlier this year, Lib Dem councillors supported a much-needed £5.7m investment into Bristol’s bus services. This money was raised by the city centre’s Clean Air Zone charges. Working with the other parties, this investment has resulted in significant upgrades to our local transport network.

The number 16 bus is now coming to Whitchurch. Originally running from Fishponds to the city centre, the 16 will be extended into South Bristol. The new stops will include Knowle West, Hengrove Park, and Whitchurch.

New hourly night buses are being introduced. Crucial to supporting night shift workers and Bristol’s thriving late night economy, a number of routes will see new hourly services between midnight and 6am on Fridays and Saturdays. The routes getting a night service are the 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 49, 43, 70, 73, 74 and the m1.

Cllr Nicholas Coombes, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze, said:

“It is brilliant to see that money raised from the Clean Air Zone is being smartly invested in improving Bristol’s bus services.

“The introduction of new night buses will benefit so many in our city. From those working crucial night shifts in health and social care settings to those working and enjoying our city’s vibrant night life, night buses will ensure that more people can travel around Bristol safely and sustainably.

Cllr Andrew Brown, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Hengrove and Whitchurch Park, said:

“After years of campaigning, we're really pleased to see local areas once again being served by regular buses.

“The newly extended 16 bus service is launching Sunday 31st August, and will run every day of the week. During weekdays, buses will run hourly from 6am until 6.30pm, and the last bus back from town will be 7.28pm.

“It will come down Whitchurch Lane from Knowle and call at the South Bristol Hospital in Hengrove Park, before going on to do a one-way loop around the Windways estate and onto Tanorth Road, Court Farm Road and Belland Drive.”
