Legal aid expert selected as Lib Dem candidate for Bristol North West
After stunning results in the EU elections, securing two new MEPs and topping the polls in Bristol North West, the Liberal Democrats look poised for success with a top legal aid expert. Liberal Democrat members have selected criminal defence and prison law specialist Chris Coleman to be their candidate for the parliamentary constituency. Chris is an experienced campaigner and has been a county and borough councillor, holding the cabinet portfolio for the green environment on Cheltenham borough council.
Former parliamentary candidate Chris Coleman said,
“I’m very excited to be the Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate for Bristol North West. I’ve been working hard across the West of England to defend the human rights and civil liberties of some the most vulnerable people in our society in my professional life. I want to deliver lasting, positive change for them in public office by prioritising education, strengthening our public services, ending the climate emergency and stopping Brexit. My work often brings me to Bristol and I’m ready to stand up for the people of Bristol North West. I’m ready to win.”
Local issues campaigner and long-time resident of north Bristol, Graham Donald welcomed the news of Chris’ selection,
“In my career as a senior civil servant I’ve worked with cabinet ministers and many high-profile politicians. After hearing Chris speak about his ambition and passion for our area I am confident that he would be a remarkable parliamentarian – a genuine servant to his constituents.”
Stephen Williams, former Liberal Democrat MP for Bristol West which at the time included Westbury Park, Henleaze, Westbury-on-Trym and Stoke Bishop, areas that currently make-up 45% of Bristol North West, said,
“Chris’ extensive experience in local government and impressive legal background gives him an unrivalled understanding of the chaos and lasting damage that would be unleashed by a calamitous ‘No Deal’ Brexit on the environment, front line services and our NHS. He has all the qualities to be the next Liberal Democrat MP to represent the residents of Bristol North West.”
The Liberal Democrat candidate for the Mayor of Bristol and Bristol North West resident, Mary Page added,
“Chris will be a phenomenal advocate and representative for our city. His experience in local government, strong environmentalist credentials and unashamedly liberal, internationalist and pro-EU outlook make him the obvious choice for Bristolians come the next general election. Gone are the days for tactical voting, now is the time to vote Lib Dem to get Lib Dem in Bristol North West.
