Lib Dem Group Leader Cllr Gary Hopkins has released a statement commenting on the decision taken by the city’s library assistants to go on strike today over changes to their working conditions.
His statement reads:
"Residents may remember that before the current Mayor took office, the Liberal Democrats ran Bristol City Council. We valued our local libraries; we invested in and opened new libraries while other councils closed theirs.
"My Liberal Democrat colleagues and I have every sympathy for the decision taken today by our city's library assistants. Positive suggestions have been dismissed out of hand by the Mayor. As a result of his sticking plaster approach and lacklustre attitude, library staff are now travelling all over the city, meaning they spend more time on our already congested roads and less time offering support to the many Bristolians who use the various services on offer at our libraries. The way the assistants have been treated throughout this entire process is a disgrace. They work tirelessly and are a credit to the local community.
“There had been a whole series of issues that have been handled badly by this administration but this shambles is beyond belief."
